A drug giant that's been fighting to keep the counterfeit drug market from coming back is helping to turn a blind eye to how Viagra might affect consumers in the future. The drugmaker is fighting back by selling it without a prescription. "It's not a magic pill for men who want a good sex life," said David E. Rosenbaum, a Pfizer spokesman.
In a letter to Pfizer, the maker of the drug, the drugmaker's chairman, Bill Shafer, said the drugmaker's approach is "an attack on its ability to sell it as a legitimate medicine for the consumer."
The letter, published in theNew England Journal of Medicinelast month, notes that Pfizer's drug is "very different from the other major drug companies, but they are doing a better job of making it available and available to the public." It also calls for the company to take action against the counterfeiters.
"We will continue to take appropriate steps to help Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies do this," Rosenbaum wrote. "Our hope is that our company's continued success in keeping the counterfeit drug market from coming back will result in greater awareness of the disease and the potential for a greater number of men who want to buy Viagra or another sex product."
Rosenbaum's letter also notes that the drugmaker plans to take action to prevent counterfeit Viagra and other counterfeit drugs from coming back.
Rosenbaum said he is not opposed to the drugmaker's approach. "I don't think it's a bad thing," he said. "It's a very important industry to be involved with."
In his letter, the company cited several cases that show that consumers would benefit from using Viagra without a prescription, including a study by the pharmaceutical firm Pfizer published inJAMA Internal Medicinethat found that "prescription-free" Viagra had a small, but measurable effect on blood pressure and heart rate. It also showed that patients taking Viagra showed no serious side effects or any problems with sexual function.
Rosenbaum cited an article in theNew York Timesthat quoted a patient who wanted a prescription for Viagra, and the patient said she could not buy it because the drug was "not available." Rosenbaum cited a study published inCochrane Reviewthat found a small, but measurable, effect on sexual desire on average of 10 minutes after a single dose of Viagra.
In addition, the company has said the drug is safe and effective. Rosenbaum said that Pfizer, in its latest letter to the FDA, is reviewing the matter.
